FLAT WHITE: THE COFFEE FROM DOWN UNDER

With a flat white, you can imagine yourself right on the beach in Australia, where this recipe originally comes from. But the flat white is also becoming increasingly popular in the Netherlands. It is a popular drink among baristas because of the perfect balance between a ristretto and frothed, silky milk.

WHAT IS A FLAT WHITE?

At first glance, a flat white looks very similar to a latte. After all, just like a latte, the flat white has a layer of milk on top of the coffee. So what makes a flat white so special? The small, strong espresso and the texture of the milk: a silky‑smooth layer of foam on top of the coffee. A delicious coffee with steamed milk, without bubbles.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FLAT WHITE AND A CAPPUCCINO?

Although a flat white looks similar to a cappuccino from above, there is a difference. The flat white is much smaller and contains a larger amount of milk. The thin layer of foam without bubbles completes it. Did you know that the name ‘flat’ white refers to how flat the foam layer is?

WHERE DOES THE FLAT WHITE COME FROM?

This drink is consumed mainly in Australia and New Zealand. It originated when the British, and later the Italians, set foot ashore in the 18th century. The Italians brought their coffee culture with them to the other side of the world. Over time, the espresso brewing method developed its own identity, giving the coffee an Australian touch. Around 1980, the flat white was born. This coffee variety then made its way back to Europe and America in the early 21st century.

MAKING A FLAT WHITE

The velvety layer of milk without bubbles is characteristic of the flat white. Achieving this perfectly is a real challenge, but it is certainly not reserved only for the most seasoned baristas.
